Remembering End Things- Christ the King

Christ the King Sunday
Luke 23:33-43
Dear friends in Christ,
They say all good things must come to an end. And so it is that we gather today at the end of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Children have been on vacation from school. 70% of employees take the Friday after Thanksgiving off, although obviously not those that work in retail businesses. All those Thanksgiving weekend sales are coming to an end. You won’t have to camp out again overnight at Best Buy until next year. Today many people, especially those that traveled great distances, pack up their bags and head to the airport, or bus station, or get in their cars, and return home. All good things must come to an end. Tomorrow it’s back to the routine, another month until the next major holiday, Christmas. Read More...

Thanksgiving Message
Deut. 26:1-11, John 6:25-35
Dear friends in Christ,
Last month I led a Sunday adult class with the topic, “Giving in a Consumer World.” In preparation I learned of a website called, globalrichlist.com. On that site you can type in your annual income and see how that ranks relative to the whole population of the world. I decided to do some research into the annual household income for zip code 55092, and found that it is $75000. I plugged in the number and learned, if you are average in this zip code, you are richer than 99.18% of the world’s population. I also found this startling fact. 85% of the world’s population earns $2100 or less a year. Read More...

Time after Pentecost- Lectionary 32
Job 19:23-27a, Luke 20:27-38
Dear friends in Christ,
If you were here last week you know that in the month of November our focus is on end things. November is the month of endings in this part of the world. The warm days of summer have ended. The long hours of daylight have ended and the growing season has come to an end. But, of course, there are also beginnings. It is the beginning of deer hunting season. It is the month of the first snowfall. The holiday season begins. Read More...

All Saints Sunday
Nov. 4th, 2007
Dear friends in Christ,
We’ve now entered the month of November. For those of us living in this part of the world, November is very much the end month. It’s the end of the warm seasons of spring, summer, and fall. It’s the end of the growing season, the time of harvest. It’s the end of longer hours of daylight. This weekend marked the end of daylights savings time. In the church year, it’s the end month of our cycle of readings, as we begin a new cycle in Advent in December. Now, to be sure, there are also beginnings in November. This weekend is the beginning of the firearms hunting season for deer. With Thanksgiving we begin the holiday season. We will very likely begin the snow season sometime this month. But the month does mark an end, before we enter something new. Read More...
